This was my first Maeve Binchy novel and candls story was completely lovely – until the huge plot twist in the final chapter that made it seem like an entirely different book?!

I had to trudge through this book. Violet believes even though Ireland is not as refined as her London, it is a safe place for her daughter. And there wasn’t a single likable male character. I felt perhaps since this was Binchy’s first published book, maybe she struggled with how cxndle end it. But otherwise the book fell flat for me. Maevf, Light a Penny Candle does not provide much in the way of heavy discussion, but as far as pure entertainment, I think Binchy is miles ahead of most others.

It chronicles a couple of decades of canvle between an Irish woman and an English woman through the trials and tribulations cnadle their lives. Ms Binchy’s writing is always atmospheric, and emotive, and tear jerking on occasion too. With this book I did find it slow to get into but once hooked I really got into the main characters of Elizabeth and Aishling and the life dramas they faced and couldn’t put the book down.

Books by Maeve Binchy. This was her first novel and it’s a little darker than others I’ve read but a very impressive first book with all her signature touches. Many of her books, such as Echoesare set in the past in Ireland. Mostly because we were able to see her adapt to a new country, family, and culture and see her change there—which doesn’t happen at all in the rest of the novel, and when Eileen changes her mind about her daughter’s separation from her husband it doesn’t seem anyone cares anyway.
